HELP STOP DOLPHIN THEME PARK IN CAYMAN!
- August 29, 2001

The Living Sea Ltd. is planning to build a dolphin-theme park, which will feature performances, encounters, snorkeling, and diving with dolphins as a tourist attraction. Despite state-of-the-art facilities and expert veterinary care, dolphins are still dying at an alarming rate in aquariums all across the globe. Luna, a bottle-nose dolphin, was captured off the coast of Baja, California, and sent to the La Concha Beach resort in La Paz, Mexico, to be used in a dolphin swim program. According to Time magazine, after just five weeks, 'Äú'Ķ she died from stomach inflammation and ulcers caused by stress, according to the autopsy report.'Äù Dolphins used in swim programs are overworked, and many cases have been reported of dolphins suffering from stress. Further, a 1995 study found that dolphins occasionally acted aggressively toward humans.

While the park proposes to keep the dolphins in 'Äúnatural enclosures,'Äù allowing them to come and go freely, the fact remains that the North Sound is not a natural home to any dolphins. The effect of releasing non-indigenous animals into the environment could be potentially disastrous for Cayman'Äôs marine life and the tourism it attracts.

Please urge the following to cancel plans for the dolphin prison. Write to:
